AEO
Also known as: Answer Engine Optimization
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the practice of structuring content so that systems which answer users directly, such as featured snippets, voice assistants and AI chatbots, can use it as a short, clear answer to a specific question.
AEO predates GEO. It first came up around Google’s featured snippets and voice assistants: the goal was to win the box that answers a question in a single paragraph. As generative AI spread, the term stretched to cover these newer answer engines too.
Are AEO and GEO the same thing?
The industry often uses them interchangeably, and there’s no agreed boundary. A rough split:
- AEO focuses on the short answer to a question: snippets, voice results, “People also ask” boxes.
- GEO focuses on the longer answers that large language models compose from several sources, and on how a brand is described in them.
In practice, most of the work is the same.
Why it matters
When users read the answer on the results page or in the assistant and move on, being the source of that answer can be worth more than the click. That’s closely tied to zero-click searches.
Example
A page that answers “How is a rent increase calculated?” in two or three plain sentences up top, then goes into detail, and marks up its FAQ section with structured data, is well set up for AEO.
