Short definition

AI Overviews are short AI-generated summaries that Google shows above the regular results for some searches, produced with a Gemini model from several web sources and linking back to the pages they draw on.

Google first tested the feature in 2023 as the Search Generative Experience (SGE), launched it to everyone in the US as AI Overviews in May 2024, and has since rolled it out to more countries and languages. Not every search gets one; Google shows them for queries where it thinks a summary will help.

How they work

According to Google, AI Overviews draw on pages found by its search systems and link to the pages they use. Google Search Central says there’s no special markup or file required to appear in them: the same guidelines that apply to regular search apply here. The basic requirements are that the page is indexed and eligible to show a snippet.

Google also offers a separate, more conversational search experience called AI Mode for longer answers.

Why it matters

When users get most of what they need from the summary, many won’t scroll to the results. That accelerates the zero-click trend. On the other hand, a site linked as a source in the overview becomes visible even if it ranks further down the page.

Example

If the overview for “how is severance pay calculated” shows three source links underneath, being one of them can draw more attention than ranking first. Tracking which sources appear in AI Overviews is part of measuring citation rate.
